Springfield Police Make Arrests After 13-year-old Crashes Stolen Car

Springfield Police made three arrests early this morning after a 13-year-old driving a stolen car crashed at the intersection of State and Catherine streets.

In addition to the arrests, police confiscated an illegal firearm - the 70th such weapon police have taken off the streets this year, police said.

Joel Arroyo-Collazo, 21, of Horace Street, was arrested July 16, at around 1:15 a.m. and charged with: carrying a loaded firearm with a license, possession of a large-capacity firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number during the commission of a felony, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a high capacity magazine, possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug, and possession with intent to distribute a Class B drug, police said.

At the time of his arrest Arroyo-Collazo was allegedly carrying a firearm loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition, packaged heroin and cocaine, and nearly $500, police said.

The 13-year-old driver was arrested on nine charges.

A 16-year-old passenger was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

The fourth and final person that was allegedly traveling in the stolen car was a 14-year-old who was released to his family, police said.

Due to the juvenile status of the arrested teens, their names are not being released.

At about a quarter past 1 a.m., July 16, police observed an occupied car that had been reported stolen on July 15. Officers got behind the vehicle, which was driving near the intersection of Allen and Rifle streets, police said.

When additional police back-up arrived, officers flicked on their lights and sirens. This is when the driver of the stolen vehicle allegedly crossed over the double yellow line and nearly struck an officer’s cruiser. The car took off, ran a red light and collide with another car near the intersection of State and Catherine streets, police said.

This is when the people inside the car allegedly got out and tried to run away. Police nabbed the 13-year-old when they failed to jump a fence behind a building on State and Sherman streets.

They caught the 16-year-old on State Street and the 14-year-old was apprehended on Buckingham Street.

The driver of the struck vehicle was transported to Bay State Medical Center to evaluate possible injuries, police said.
